Hudson Cancelled Your CSLB Bond: The Replacement Checklist
Hudson Insurance Company cancelled a large block of California contractor license bonds effective September 1, 2026. If your bond was one of them and no replacement is on file, CSLB has suspended your license as of that date under Business & Professions Code §7071.11. This page is the fastest path back to good standing.
The 5-Step Fix
Check your license status
Pull your license on the CSLB License Lookup. Look at the bond section for a Hudson bond with a 09/01/2026 cancellation date, and the status line for a suspension notice. Check both your contractor's bond and, if your license uses an RMO/RME, the bond of qualifying individual — Hudson wrote both types.
Get a replacement $25,000 bond — backdated
Apply with a new admitted surety and tell the agent up front: "I need the effective date backdated to September 1, 2026 — Hudson block cancellation." This is routine for mass cancellations; sureties know the drill. Premiums are credit-based, and multi-year terms usually beat annual pricing.
Confirm the surety files with CSLB
Most sureties file electronically, but the legal trigger is the date CSLB receives the bond — not the date you paid. Ask for the filing confirmation and don't consider this done until you have it.
Verify the suspension lifted
Re-check your CSLB license record a few days after filing. The new bond should appear with its 09/01/2026 effective date and the suspension should clear retroactively — restoring continuous licensure with no gap.
Update your records everywhere
Save the bond, filing confirmation, and a screenshot of the restored license. Then update the bond number anywhere the old Hudson bond is on file: GC prequalification portals, public-works registrations, DIR records, and any active project compliance systems.
Know which bond you need? Apply online and see your price before you buy. The bond is filed electronically with CSLB. Not sure which bond applies?
If You're Past the 90-Day Window
File a Request for §7071.7 Bond Acceptance (form 13B-31) with CSLB, explaining that the lapse resulted from your surety's block cancellation — circumstances beyond your control. It's a discretionary process, so include everything: the Hudson cancellation notice, your replacement bond, and the timeline of your replacement efforts.
Why You Shouldn't Wait
- Payment risk: under §7031, owners can refuse to pay — or claw back payment — for work performed while not duly licensed. A suspension gap on an active project is real money at risk.
- Permits stop: building departments verify license status before issuing.
- Bid lists: GC compliance platforms flag suspended licenses automatically.
